The JA-3 shear pin relief safety valve acts as an essential protective component mounted on the discharge side of mud pumps. Its relief pressure can be flexibly adjusted by replacing matching shear pins, delivering easy operation and stable long-term performance. Two connection configurations, threaded and flanged, are offered to match different pipeline installation demands. Widely equipped on high-pressure jet drilling rigs, this valve also fits high-pressure circulation systems conveying water, oil and other liquid media.
Product Description
Before pump startup, confirm the rated protection pressure according to the specs of your mud pump liners and pistons. Remove the valve top cover and install one dedicated shear pin into the pin hole of the shear plate (only one shear pin per shear plate is permitted). When pump head pressure exceeds the preset rated value, the shear pin will snap instantly, and drilling mud will flow out through side outlets to release excess pressure and safeguard the whole mud pump unit. Never substitute original shear pins with iron wire, welding rods or other makeshift materials, as this will disrupt the calibrated relief pressure and lead to severe safety incidents. Consumable spare parts of this valve include shear pins, pistons, piston rods and rubber bumpers.
Installation Recommendations
We suggest fitting an additional suction relief valve on the suction pipeline to absorb sudden pressure surges and prevent pump damage. The suction relief valve is preferably installed on the pump suction manifold, while alternative positions along the suction line are acceptable based on field layout. Discharge pipelines from the relief valve should slope gently downward toward the mud tank and be fully supported to avoid low-lying pockets, where mud sedimentation and solidification could block fluid flow. Set the valve relief pressure to 150% of normal operating pressure. 70 psi is the standard setting for regular drilling operations, which can be modified to fit unique job requirements. The maximum working pressure of this JA-3 model reaches 35 MPa.
