What Is a Zirconia Ceramic Mud Pump Liner?

A zirconia ceramic mud pump liner is a replaceable fluid-end wear component that provides the working bore for the reciprocating mud pump piston. During pump operation, the piston moves inside the liner while drilling fluid is displaced through the fluid end.

Unlike a conventional metallic wear surface, the working surface of this liner is formed by a zirconia ceramic inner sleeve. FH ceramic liners combine this ceramic inner sleeve with a forged-steel outer sleeve to form a composite liner structure for mud pump applications.

Zirconia Ceramic Liner Construction

FH zirconia ceramic mud pump liners use a 45# forged-steel outer sleeve combined with a zirconia ceramic inner sleeve. The outer sleeve provides the supporting structure of the liner, while the zirconia ceramic inner sleeve forms the working surface in contact with the mud pump piston and drilling fluid.

According to FH product specifications, the zirconia ceramic material provides high hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high toughness and high flexural strength. This material combination is intended for applications where wear life and longer replacement intervals are important operating considerations.

Because liner dimensions and installation interfaces vary with the corresponding pump design, replacement liners should be confirmed against the required pump model, part number and dimensional requirements.

For replacement or OEM production, customers can provide the pump model, existing part number, liner dimensions, technical drawing or an approved sample. Ceramic and bimetallic mud pump liners use different working-surface materials and should be selected according to operating conditions, maintenance strategy and replacement requirements.

Zirconia ceramic liners are intended for applications where high wear resistance and extended replacement intervals are important considerations. Bimetallic liners use a high-chromium metallic inner sleeve and provide another established replacement option for mud pump service.
